The short version

What WordPress performance monitoring actually measures

Performance monitoring is easy to talk about loosely and easy to measure badly. The version that matters is the one Google uses, because that is the one tied to search. Google grades a page two ways, and it helps to keep them apart.

The first is the Lighthouse performance score, a single number from 0 to 100 that you have probably seen in Google PageSpeed Insights. It is calculated in a lab, under controlled conditions, from a handful of timing metrics. It is a fast way to read whether a page is in good shape, poor shape, or somewhere in between.

The second is Core Web Vitals, which are field measurements taken from real visitors on real devices and connections. These are the numbers Google actually uses for ranking, gathered from the Chrome User Experience Report. A page can score well in the lab and still have shaky field data, which is exactly why you want to see both rather than one in isolation.

The Core Web Vitals that matter

There are three Core Web Vitals, and each answers a different question a visitor cares about.

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures loading. It is the moment the main content of the page appears. Google considers 2.5 seconds or less to be good.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures responsiveness, or how quickly the page reacts when someone taps or clicks. INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in 2024. Good is 200 milliseconds or less.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability, the annoying jump when an image or ad loads late and pushes the text you were reading. Good is 0.1 or less.

In the lab, Lighthouse also reports Total Blocking Time (TBT), which stands in for INP when there is no field data yet, and it is one of the metrics that most heavily influences the headline score. Why performance is a ranking and revenue issue
